The Rite of Spring (ballet reduction)
chamber orchestra | Igor Stravinsky, arr. Morgan Denney (PDF download)
Chamber orchestra reduction for 25 musicians minimum. (33:00-35:00)
At last a wonderful reduction that not only fits into a medium sized pit, but also manages to capture the sonic impact of Stravinskyโs iconic work. One would expect the multiple parts that have been deftly sewn together to be virtuosic and they are: but certainly not impossible! The dancers prior to the first rehearsal were concerned that some of their โauralโ cues might be missing and were pleasantly surprised that they heard everything needed to perform their best. In fact they found the energy coming from the pit to be inspiring. Some audience members articulated their amazement on just how good this version sounded.
This version is a welcome addition to the ballet orchestra repertoire. If you are considering a Rite of Spring production, you owe it to yourself to peruse Morgan Denney’s brilliant adaptation.
โWes Kenney (Music Director, Fort Collins Symphony)
Morgan Denneyโs masterful reduction of Rite of Spring was nothing short of extraordinary for Canyon Concert Balletโs production. Her arrangement preserved the raw power and complexity of Stravinskyโs iconic score while making it accessible for a smaller ensemble, without losing any of its emotional intensity or rhythmic drive.
Morganโs work allowed our dancers to engage with the music in an incredibly intimate and visceral way, deepening the connection between movement and sound. Her reduction elevated our performance to a new level, allowing us to bring a bold and ambitious work to life with clarity, impact, and artistic integrity.
We are immensely grateful for her contribution and canโt wait to collaborate with her again.
